Jonny Greenwood part of the Wordless Music Series?

Check out this link: http://www.wordlessmusic.org/Schedule.html. Read the fine print at the bottom.

It says that Jonny Greenwood will be taking part in the Wordless Music Series for 2007-08. What is this you say? From the website:

The Wordless Music Series is devoted to the idea that the sound worlds of classical and contemporary instrumental music—in genres such as indie rock, free jazz, and electronic music—share more in common than conventional thinking might suggest. To illustrate the continuity between these worlds, the series will pair rock and electronic musicians in an intimate concert setting with more traditionally understood classical and chamber music performers. In so doing, the series will bring together audiences and introduce listeners of both classical and contemporary music to composers that they might otherwise not encounter, for a completely new concert experience. It will also demonstrate that the various boundaries and genre distinctions segregating music today—“popular” and “classical”; “uptown” and “downtown”; “high” art and “low” —are an artificial construction in need of dismantling.

Now obviously we have to tell you that this is all we know and nothing has been announced or confirmed. While this appears like something Jonny may be interested in doing, until we hear it from him or management, this is being filed as a “rumor”.

YouTube Friday: Go to Sleep

Check out this video of Radiohead playing “Go to Sleep” live on Later… with Jools Holland. The description says that Jonny’s guitar playing at the end is “phenomenal”. We have to agree.

It’s easy to understand why Jonny has suffered from RSI over the years.

Jonny Greenwood is the ControllerThis is probably old news to you fans, but there is a new compilation album coming out soon entitled Jonny Greenwood is the Controller which features Jonny’s favorite reggae music tracks. The album is being put out on Trojan Records, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Jonny indulges his passion for reggae music by mining through Trojan’s extensive catalog and compiling his favorite tracks onto one album, Jonny Greenwood is the Controller. Coming out on March 6th, 2007, this one of a kind collection digs deep into rich Jamaican sounds and covers styles from classic Ska and Rocksteady to vintage Dub and Roots and includes the likes of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Desmond Dekker, Delroy Wilson, Scientist & Jammy and many others.

We have one of the tracks available for you to download! Isn’t that cool?

Radiohead news wrap-up

mm Tottenham.jpg

We can come up with a ton of excuses on why nothing has been posted here since last month. Don’t worry, we’ll spare you. A lot of effort has been put in to a redesign of the entire site so it’s not like we’ve totally neglected things.

» So what’s new in the world of Radiohead? Well, as you probably know, the band is back with pal Nigel Godrich recording the new album “properly” now according to Thom. There are plenty of photos of behind the scenes action in the studio over at the band’s blog Dead Air Space. One of the photos (pictured above) is of Stanley painting. He usually bunks up with the band while in the studio and designs all the album artwork while they record. Could this be a hint of the album cover?

» Speaking of Mr. Donwood, there is a new section on his site called “Dead Children Playing.” Nice. There will be an exhibition in Barcelona, Spain from November 26 to December 16 where paintings from Stanley and Dr. Tchock (Thom Yorke) will be displayed. For more information, check out the site.

» Now for something completely different. Radiohead rag dolls.

» Later this month, Thom will be releasing a 5 song / 2 video EP called Spitting Feathers. This looks to be a Japanese release but Amazon has it for pre-sale. Here’s the tracklist:

1. Drunkk Machine
2. A Rat’s Nest
3. Jetstream
4. Harrowdown Hill (Extended Mix)
5. Iluvya
6. Video – Harrowdown Hill
7. Video – Analyse

» Better late then never, right? Thanks to Justin for sending us the Radiohead pumpkin he carved for Halloween.

» So by visiting Green Plastic, it would be assumed that you have an interest in Radiohead. Maybe you have an interest in marching bands as well? Well then, today is your lucky day. The University of Arizona marching band is doing a 15 minute Radiohead medley this year. See for yourself! Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3.

» Jonny Greenwood (Happy belated Birthday btw) is up for BBC Composer of the Year for 2006. You can stream his piece “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” here.

» A lot of people emailed to tell us that Thom’s “Analyse” plays at the end of Christopher Nolan’s new film The Prestige. So now you know.
Ciao!

(thanks to everyone that wrote in with news)

More on the Wyrd Sisters Lawsuit

We were able to get a statement from Kim Baryluk, one of the Wyrd Sisters, on her band’s lawsuit against Warner Bros. To catch up on what is going on, read our previous report.

Kim first wanted to say that they are not really wanting to go after Radiohead. “I believe that if they knew what Warner Bros was doing to a little band though, they would not want to be a part of it.”

Apparently she has been getting a lot of hate mail, and had this to say:

“I’m sorry you are so angry at us. I wish I could take the time to explain. The chart magazine did not fairly represent what happened. What happened is that the lawyers from Warner Bros called us in June and *threatened* us. They told us that if we didn’t sign some papers agreeing to co-exist with them then they’d ‘have their army of lawyers shut our little girl’s band down’.

In the real world, we have trademark rights to our name. Just the same way no one can go around calling themselves Warner Bros if they’re not Warner Bros. Yes, we know other wyrd sisters have popped up. They have not been musical bands, and no one has got the other wyrd sisters confused with us, so we have just let them slide by. Besides, no one has threatened us before, or told us that we should just give them what they want…our name… because they’ll hurt us if we don’t. That’s just not right.

Warner Bros did not do their homework. They have made huge publicity splashes about their wyrd sister band. If we go anywhere new now, people will show up expecting the boys from radiohead to be there. Their wyrd sisters will have global impact. We will be seen as the imposters. Can you imagine the abuse we’ll get then? This is not about greed, because we expect that the money will win as it always does and that is not us.

Warner is only now saying that they won’t use the name in the movie, since we’ve begun legal proceedings. It’s a little late for that. I certainly didn’t want a fight or this bad publicity, but my options are limited. Either way we lose. At least we’ll go down with a little dignity. I hope…”
Kim

Jonny speaks

Jonny Greenwood made an appearance at the official Radiohead message board yesterday and described the band’s first day in their Los Angeles studio.

Coz is playing bass right now, and singing along like a loony….pretty intense stuff in here! It’s day one, and going fine.” He also stated that the recording sessions will take a couple of weeks.

The night before, the band went to the Beck concert which Jonny described as “charming” and “ace”.
