this
is one of my fav songs from pablo honey
the
song starts off
destiny...destiny
protect me from the world...hold my hand...protect me from the world
what
thom is saying here is...that he wishes for destiny to make his
life good...to keep anything bad from happeneing to him...
then
the bridge
here
we are..without running and confusion..and i dont see no confusion
anywhere
this
is saying that he knows where he wants to go...he can go calmly
and can see no obstacles ahead
the
chorus
if
the world does turn..and if london burns..i'll be standing on a
beach with my guitar...i wanna be in a band when i get to heaven...anyone
can play guitar and never feel nothing anymore
this
says that no matter what...he's gonna be faithful to his music...'cause
that's the only thing that will always be his...nobody can take
it away...it is his sacred belonging any musician can identify with
this song
next
verse
grow my hair...grow my hair i am jim morrison i wanna be jim morrison
this
simply states that he wants to be in the spotlight...to be the one
who everyone loves....to have all things be at his fingertips
i
get a wanting feeling from this song...i can feel just how much
thom meant this song to be true he should have said AMEN at the
end of this song...to finish this prayer

This is a song about posers and wannabes. The person in the songs
believes that he's destined to be a star and be protected from the
real world (destiny, destiny protect me from the world...). He knows
what he is going to do and he doesn't have to do anything do get there
(here we are with our running and confusion...). He is going to be
famous, he wants to be like Morrison (grow my hair, grow my hair I
am Jim Morrison...). When the world spins out of control, he will
wait for the tidal wave, and live on in memory, like the music star
he is. The last line sums up the song - Anyone can play guitar and
they won't be a nothing anymore. I don't think that this is about
Thom or Radiohead, but about the bands that are nothing more than
manufactured and fake. |

This song is first and foremost about how one grows to love everything
about guitars after learning to play. The first time I heard this
song was when a close friend passed away suddenly. The world was collapsing
around me, and this song suddenly made alot of sense. From my perspective,
the world had turned, and london was burning. The walls were caving
in, etc. So I sat and I wrote a song. For someone who really loves
their guitar, playing is just like talking with your fingers. The
line "grow my hair, i wanna be jim morrisson" is about how aspiring
to be a superstar and the quixotic romanticism of young musicians
is better than any actual success could ever be. |

I think the visual aspects in this song are perhaps the most beautiful
thing about it. 'When london burns I'll be standing on the beach with
my guitar' It must be nice to know exactly what makes you happiest
and know what you would like to be doing at the end of everything.
