Although
the song was inspired by a car accident Thom was in, I find that
there is another way to interpret the song. I think that the song
is about a relationship. Unfortunately, it is one-sided relationship
that never seemed to happen. It is a dream, because he was rejected
from the start. Now, all he can do is think about this girl constantly.
He doesn't't know how to stop and it is tearing him apart.
"I
find it hard to drive your stupid car. I find it hard, cause I never
get that far."
I
think this is about a guy trying to impress a girl and get her attention,
but he always seems to get nowhere with her.
"And
you put my brain in overload. I can't change gear, I cannot see
the road"
He's
stuck thinking about her. He cannot concentrate on what's in front
of him because the thought of her keeps invading his mind. No matter
how hard he tries, he can't forget her.
"You
got concrete eyes and I cannot see your face. And I failed in life,
cause you crushed me with your hands." This is the worst part of
it all. Not only is he completely infatuated with this girl, but
she rejects him and leaves him feeling crushed.
"And
you put my brain in overload. I can't change gear, I cannot see
the road"
Again,
even after the rejection, his thoughts focus on her. The song ends
with Thom just screaming "Road". This shows the frustration he is
facing because she is all that he can think of. All he sees in his
mind is her eyes.
I
must say that this is one of my favorite Radiohead songs. It's rather
short, but it's right next to fake plastic trees on my list.
