Spin’s 50 Greatest Bands of All Time

Radiohead made it to # 15 in Spin magazine’s 50 Greatest Bands of All Time. Here’s the excerpt from the article:

On 1995’s The Bends, Radiohead were a compelling young Brit-pop band, but with follow-up OK Computer, they spooked rock fans into a new level of obsession. The album’s brooding minor chords and white-noise buzz grew more claustrophobic with each track, even as Thom Yorke’s personal-yet-impersonal lyrics made songs about car crashes and crushed insects somehow moving. Newer bands began to cop Radiohead’s paranoid but confessional, slurry but catchy approach. In response, they sighed deeply and recorded Kid A, somehow transforming glitchy prog rock into classic pop.

INFLUENCED: Travis, Sigur Ros, Coldplay, Clinic, JJ72, Doves, Elbow, Wes Borland
CLASSIC ALBUM: OK Computer

Chris Martin of Coldplay had the following to say about Radiohead: “When I saw Radiohead, I thought ‘Wow, maybe you really can do what you want and get away with it. They did exactly what they wanted and people responded…not everyone wants to listen to nonsense rock.”

Jeanne Loriod

The Baltimore City Paper has an article up about Jeanne Loriod, who died last August at the age of 73. Loriod is remembered as a master at of the ondes Martenot, the same instrument (an electronic keyboard that features a ring that slides on a string) that Jonny Greenwood could be seen playing on songs like “How to Disappear Completely” and “The National Anthem.”

You may or may not know that Loriod and Greenwood were in contact with each other and were even planning a collaboration of some sort.
Jonny spoke about Loriod in an article that appeared in the New Yorker last August:

Jonny is fascinated by Olivier Messiaen, the late French composer; it is because of Messiaen that he became interested in the ondes martenot, which is featured in many of the composer’s works. “I heard the ‘Turangalîla Symphony’ when I was fifteen,” Jonny went on, “and I became round-the-bend obsessed with it. I wish I could have met him or shaken his hand. I did get to meet his sister-in-law, the ondeiste Jeanne Loriod. I’m learning Messiaen’s ‘Trois Petites Liturgies’ for a performance in London.”

Tom Cruise on Radiohead

As you may know, Tom Cruise has spoken a lot about Radiohead and the role their music has played on the filming of his new move Vanilla Sky. Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview:

Is it true that Cameron Crowe played music while taping a scene?
He always did. It started on Jerry Macguire with me; that was the first picture. Cameron is a musician also. He’s a writer, a musician, a filmmaker and we just started playing around one day and he just had music. As an actor you just let it wash over you and see what color it’s going to bring to the scene. He also does stuff where we’re going along and he’ll throw out lines at me, it feels like a workshop when we’re working. Everybody is very comfortable and relaxed and there was a lot of focus on the scene and everyone kind of contributes. It helps the actors and sometimes you get different ideas and colors. For this movie we listened to Kid A a lot and to the U2 album. The Icelandic group (Sigur Ros) too. Of course, the Stones and Bruce Springsteen but a lot of Kid A. Walking through New York I think of U2 and I think of Radiohead.
