In Rainbows Jonny Greenwood Radiohead tour

Interview with Jonny Greenwood

Jonny did an interview with Gothamist which talks about all the stuff he’s been doing lately. We definitely recommend you reading it. Here’s a snippit about the new album:

What’s motivating the band to distribute the album this way? Just getting it out quickly. It was kind of an experiment as well; we were just doing it for ourselves and that was all. People are making a big thing about it being against the industry or trying to change things for people but it’s really not what motivated us to do it. It’s more about feeling like it was right for us and feeling bored of what we were doing before.

Why give people the option to pay whatever they want? It’s just interesting to make people pause for even a few seconds and think about what music is worth now. I thought it was an interesting thing to ask people to do and compare it to whatever else in their lives they value or don’t value.

Have you gotten any figures of how much people are choosing to pay? No we get the numbers tomorrow supposedly. Yeah, I don’t know. The more exciting thing for me is just hearing it on the radio today and knowing it’s landed on everybody’s desk at the same time. That’s what’s exciting. But yeah, I’m sure our manager will have some idea soon.

And then skip down to this which will surely interest you:

Are you working out plans to tour in America at this point? We’re talking about touring somewhere in the world next year. Now that the album’s out that’s what we’re talking about. I hope you’ll get to see some good shows.

What a day

Hopefully you all have heard In Rainbows by now. If not, go over to www.inrainbows.com and purchase (or not purchase if that’s your thing) the album. Excitement is in the air and we at GP are reminded of how wonderful it is to hear a Radiohead album without it being leaked first. It’s similar to when OK Computer was released and all we had to go by were live recordings of the songs.

Anyway, Thom wrote on Dead Air Space today:

hope you are enjoying listening to the download of In Rainbows.
its a relief to us all that finally its out there.
its been a mad couple of weeks.. as i’m sure you can imagine…
“I love pop music to death….. Most great composers rely on folk music. I rely on pop music.
I’m not saying I’m a great composer or that pop music is folk music. There’s a whole endless thing going on out there.
You make your little pond but if your pond isn’t connected to the river, which isn’t connected to an ocean,
it’s just going to dry up. It’s just a little piss pool. I’ve lived too long to be happy in a pond.”
I found this in WIRE magazine over a pint in the pub last night.. its Robert Wyatt

In other news, our server has been taking a beating over the last day. Our dedicated server also hosts Mortigi Tempo, which is our Radiohead message board. Because of all the crazy traffic, we’ve had to switch MT to a lo-fi version for the time-being so that you can still post and talk with other fans. Hopefully we’ll be back to normal soon.

Finally, what’s up with Radiohead and the number 10? Conspiracy theory or just plain silly?

Oasis, Jamiroquai to follow Radiohead

Some of the music industry’s biggest names are considering offering their music free online following the success of the experiment by the band Radiohead to let fans download their new album without charge.

The band’s website topped the chart of music websites with an 11-fold increase in internet hits after the announcement, according to internet monitoring agency HitWise.

Now Jamiroquai and Oasis, two major names that are not contracted to a record labels, are rumoured to be considering following Radiohead by offering work for free, according to industry sources.

Radiohead refuse to reveal how many fans have pre-ordered their seventh album, In Rainbows, but figures from HitWise show the move pushed the site up from number 43 to the top slot for music websites in the UK.

Google say that searches for Radiohead have increased tenfold this week as fans log on to the band’s site, with the majority – according to the band’s spokesman – spurning the opportunity to download the album for as little as 45 pence and instead signing up for the £40 box set, which includes vinyl records, CD and artwork.

No promos for In Rainbows

Radiohead’s PR company (Nasty Little Man) sent out a release explaining that the new album will not have any promos at all and also confirming that you can pay whatever you want for the downloads.

There will be no advances, promotional copies, digital streams, media sites, etc. of RADIOHEAD’s In Rainbows.

Everyone in the world will be getting the music at the same time: Oct. 10. That includes us. We don’t have anything to play anyone in the nine days until the record is available. Everyone at nasty has put his or her order in and just to clarify: you are not being asked to pay for a promo (as some have inquired). you can pay nothing or as much or as little as you want.

There will be no promotional copies of the discbox either, as each discbox is being made to order. Sorry.
