Radiohead, Jude Law, and Greenpeace team up to #SaveTheArctic

Radiohead have teamed up with actor Jude Law and Greenpeace to produce a short film (above) about a polar bear struggling to survive after being forced to leave its Arctic home. The band’s “Everything in its Right Place” is used as the soundtrack with Law providing the voiceover.

Greenpeace states that “oil companies are using melting sea ice to drill for more of the oil that is causing global warming in the first place. Shell’s Arctic fleet will be arriving any day now to begin exploratory drilling off the coast of Alaska this summer.”

Jude Law, commenting on the film, said:

“As the Arctic sea ice melts, polar bears are being forced to go far beyond their normal habitat to find food and look after their young. This film is a powerful expression of how our fates are intertwined, because climate change is affecting all of us no matter where we live.”

“Right now a handful of oil companies are trying to carve up the Arctic for the sake of their next quarterly results but a global movement is growing to stop them. I stand with hundreds of thousands of others who think the area should be made into a sanctuary, protected from corporate greed for good.”

Thom Yorke also made a comment:

”We have to stop the oil giants pushing into the Arctic. An oil spill in the Arctic would devastate this region of breathtaking beauty, while burning that oil will only add to the biggest problem we all face, climate change. That’s why I’m backing this campaign.”

Radiohead Get Real With ‘Knives Out’ Video

Radiohead are working on the video for their next single, “Knives Out,” and the clip will feature real human beings for a change.

Following the abstract cartoon “iBlips” from Kid A and the computer-animated video for the U.K. single “Pyramid Song,” the band decided to go live action on this outing. Directed by Michel Gondry who helped Bjork achieve her quirky vision in the videos for “Human Behaviour,” “Hyperballad” and “Bachelorette,” among others the video features an appearance by lead singer Thom Yorke himself. From Sonicnet. {thanks to Luke and Charlie}

If you live in Illinois, Wisconsin or Indiana you can enter this contest for tickets to the Chicago show from WXRT. {thanks to Steve}

This is from U2.com:

U2 and RADIOHEAD join forces to raise the plight of AIDS holocaust in Africa.
This week fans are being invited to e-mail politicians and other leaders in the richest countries urging them to direct the IMF and World Bank to cancel the debts they are owed by the poorest countries.
This would free up hundreds of millions of dollars each year to help the fight against AIDS.
As well as lobbying politicians through the internet, supporters are also being invited to the STOP GLOBAL AIDS RALLY on June 23rd in New York.
Musicians, speakers and thousands of campaigners will be calling for urgent action to end the Global AIDS crisis. (Supporters assemble 11am at Washington Square Park (Manhattan) and march to Bryant Park for the rally.)
Campaigners are demanding urgent action ahead of the forthcoming UN summit on AIDS and are demanding a a New Deal on Debt to fight AIDS at the G7 meetings in Rome and Genoa in July.
Please cut, paste and send the e-letter below to the following email addresses of President Bush and other leaders of rich nations – known as the G7.

Dear G7 leaders
The AIDS holocaust in Africa requires urgent action. When 5,500 Africans die each day from AIDS it is strange that these poor countries still spend more repaying debts than on healthcare. This could be changed if you would agree to direct the IMF and World Bank to cancel the debts they are owed by the poorest countries. This would free up hundreds of millions of dollars each year to help the fight against AIDS.
Please consider this at the forthcoming UN summit on AIDS and agree a New Deal on Debt to fight AIDS at the G7 meetings in Rome and Genoa in July.
Future generations will judge ours by whether we saw the connection between the debt and AIDS crises, and acted to end both decisively.
Yours truly,
…………..

Bjork on working with Thom

Bjork was recently interview by Time Out and said the following about working with Thom on “I’ve Seen It All”:

“It was my idea to work with Thom. We spent four days in Spain just singing as and when we felt like it. He doesn’t do things lightly.”

The latest from the NME

RADIOHEAD’s long-awaited new album ‘KID A’ will be unveiled on Friday morning (August 18) – and nme.com will be among the first people in the world to hear it.

Our reporter will be on hand to bring a track-by-track report as soon as the playback has taken place, at 10am in a secret location in north London.

In other Radiohead news, mystery surrounds a press release, supposedly from the US, which has been “leaked.” It claims that the release of ‘Kid A’ will be accompanied by, amongst other things, a direct link to ‘Lost Children’ – a hidden website containing constantly changing Radiohead rarities, a “four-hour webcast at the end of August from the band’s studio in Oxford” and a live performance at the Air studios in London on September 4-5 for 200-300 invited guests.

A UK spokesperson for the band has been unable to confirm or deny the authenticity of the “press release”.

She told nme.com that some of the information on the release was “definitely true”, such as the band producing a series of animated “video blips” which will be used for Internet and regional promotion, but questioned the other, more ambitious claims on the release.

There is currently no confirmation on the official Radiohead website, www.radiohead.com, and the more credible unofficial band sites, such aswww.followmearound.com have dismissed the release as a hoax.
