Green Plastic is 13!

Today marks our 13th birthday, meaning this site is now a teenager. Time goes by fast!

Let’s pause for a moment to remember what happened in 1997:

  • January 20 – U.S. President Bill Clinton is inaugurated for his second term.
  • February 28 – The North Hollywood shootout takes place between 2 heavily armed bank robbers and Los Angeles Police Department officers.
  • March 26 – In San Diego, California, 39 Heaven’s Gate cultists commit mass suicide at their compound.
  • May 2 – Tony Blair is appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom by Elizabeth II.
  • May 21 – Radiohead’s OK Computer is released in Japan
  • June 16 – Radiohead’s OK Computer is released in the UK
  • July 1 – Radiohead’s OK Computer is released in the US
  • August 1- Steve Jobs returns to Apple Computer, Inc at Macworld in Boston.
  • August 31 – Diana, Princess of Wales, is taken to hospital after a car accident shortly after midnight, in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris. She is pronounced dead at 04:00 a.m
  • October 26 – 1997 World Series: The Florida Marlins defeat the Cleveland Indians.
  • October 30 – After suffering a brain aneurysm onstage, R.E.M.’s drummer Bill Berry announces that he will leave the band.
  • November 10 – Telecom companies WorldCom and MCI Communications announce a US$37 billion merger to form MCI WorldCom (the largest merger in U.S. history).

Crazy! Seems like a totally different world. Many thanks to all the visitors over the past 13 years! Here’s to another 13! *gulp*

And now we are 12

On March 26, 1997, “A Green Plastic Radiohead Page” was born. Let’s go back to this time, shall well?

OK Computer had yet to be released
– Bill Clinton was still president of the US
– I had to update the site a lot from a university computer lab
– There were a ton of RH fansites out there (Planet Telex, Lift, Tony’s RH Page, Polyethylene, etc…)
– The site originally was hosted on a free AOL homepage
– I really had no idea what I was doing
– People were really convinced that Thom and Stanley were the same person
– Animated gifs (’nuff said!)

12 years later and we are still around. While it’s become more and more difficult to give time to the site, it’s still a joy to run and I hope to be around for a long time. Many many thanks to everyone that has ever contributed to the site and of course, thanks to the band who have always had nothing but kind words to say about GP and allowed me and the other fansites the freedom to do what we wanted.

No alarms and no excuses

Hello there… Remember this site?

First off, apologies for the lack of updates. There’s really no excuse other than personal and work lives became much more important over the last few months. 2007 should be better folks. It has to be better as this year marks 10 years of GP. Can you believe that? 10 years?! When I first started Green Plastic on my free AOL member page, I had no idea that it would of been a part of my life for this long. It’s gotten me jobs, it’s introduced me to new people, and it’s given me the opportunity to meet the band. For those that thought that I had given up on the site, fear not! While work and life have become more important to me, I will always have a place for this site. I mentioned in the last update that a redesign is in progress. That is still happening. I did tweak the older layout today as you may have noticed.

Okay, enough of that. Let me tell you what Radiohead has been doing since we last updated:

Most importantly, the band are back at work on the new album. Writing in the Dead Air Space blog last week, Thom mentioned that the band were “working on a version of 15step and rebuilding our studio in the wind.” He also suggests that if you live in the UK, that you visit http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/trident/.

Thom spoke in an interview recently saying that the new album is similar to OK Computer but “but much more terrifying.” The album should include songs like “Videotape” and “Bangers N Mash.” There’s still no date on the album release. Stay posted…

Thom Yorke’s Eraser is nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Alternative Music Album” category. He faces stiff competition from the Arctic Monkeys, The Flaming Lips, Gnarls Barkley, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The 49th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 11, 2007 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Thom is also nominated for the “British Male Solo” award at this year’s Brit Awards. James Morrison, Jarvis Cocker, Lemar and Paolo Nutini are all nominated too. The awards take place at London’s Earls Court Arena on February 14th.

There is plenty of other news, which we’ll post up soon. In the meantime, check out this video of an interview with Thom back in October:

(thanks to everyone that wrote in concerned about the status of the site. all is well)
