In Rainbows released January 1 in the US

official album cover

It was officially announced today that TBD Records (Radiohead’s own imprint)/ATO Records Group will be releasing the physical version of In Rainbows in the United States on January 1, 2008.

Released in download format earlier last month, In Rainbows has already received tremendous acclaim in the press. British music magazine Q wrote “In Rainbows is a brilliant work” while Rolling Stone said the album “delivers an emotional punch that proves all other rock stars owe us an apology.” New York magazine raved, “Radiohead has made their best music in years, maybe ever.”

The first two singles will be “Bodysnatchers” and “Jigsaw Falling in to Place”.

More information about the release as well as touring plans are to follow.

PS. Above is the official cover sent to us by TBD Records. Click on it for hi-res.

“Jigsaw Falling Into Place” first single to be released

From the NME:

Radiohead’s album ‘In Rainbows’ is set to be released this year on CD and vinyl.

‘In Rainbows’ was available to download on October 10 via their official website – however, following this, the band recently signed a ‘conventional’ record deal with XL Recordings.

The album will now be released physically on December 31, with single ‘Jigsaw Falling Into Place’ following on January 14.

Meanwhile, the band have distanced themselves from reports that most people who downloaded the record did so for free and took advantage of Radiohead’s offer to let fans name their own price.

“In response to purely speculative figures announced in the press regarding the number of downloads and the price paid for the album, the group’s representatives would like to remind people that, as the album could only be downloaded from the band’s website, it is impossible for outside organisations to have accurate figures on sales,” they explained.

The statement added: “However, they can confirm that the figures quoted by the company comScore Inc are wholly inaccurate and in no way reflect definitive market intelligence or, indeed, the true success of the project.”

Since XL is not handling the distribution of In Rainbows in North America, we can assume (and hope) that a similar release will be announced with ATO/Side One around the same date.

Radiohead strike record deal with XL

According to Billboard:

Radiohead has ended weeks of speculation by confirming it has struck a deal with British indie label XL Recordings for the physical release of its new album, “In Rainbows.”

The deal is expected to cover territories outside North America, leaving the band free to sign a separate deal there, but no further details have yet been made available.

A release date for the physical CD has also not been given, but sources suggest it will coincide with the Dec. 3 arrival of the “discbox” edition of “In Rainbows” available only from Radiohead.com. Others speculate it may not appear until next year.

The band broke the industry rulebooks when they made “In Rainbows” available for download on Oct. 10, with fans able to name their own price. No sales figures have been released, but the band’s manager Bryce Edge told Billboard recently that reports of 1.2 million were “exaggerated.”

London-based XL, which operates under the umbrella of the Beggars Group, last year released Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke’s critically lauded solo album, “The Eraser,” which was nominated for the annual Mercury Music Prize.

Radiohead to embark on a world tour in 2008

From Billboard.com:

Radiohead will embark on a rare international tour starting next spring, Billboard.com can reveal. Although details are still sketchy, expect the British alternative rock band to play multiple markets, in sizeable venues.

“We plan to tour next year, starting in May through to probably the end of the year. With lots of holidays in that period,” says Bryce Edge of Courtyard Management, the firm that manages the band.

“At the moment we are talking with our agents in North America and for the rest of the world, trying to get a schedule which works for the band and works financially,” he adds.

An extended run will be a treat for dedicated fans who missed Radiohead’s summer 2006 dates, which landed in a handful of European and north American markets.

“They toured last summer almost for creative reasons, definitely not for financial reasons. And I think they quite enjoyed it,” explains Edge. “The next set of touring will be slightly larger-scale venues.”

Frontman Thom Yorke is anything but a fan of international treks and, in the past, the singer has raised concerns over the effects of touring on climate change.

“He likes to do shows, but the whole business of schlepping around the world is not top of his list of favorite things to do,” adds Edge. “He really enjoys playing to the fans — it’s just the process of how to do that which is the pain in the neck (for Yorke). They’re not road dogs. They never have been.”

Radiohead tore up the industry manual when they allowed fans to name their price to download its latest album, “In Rainbows,” released Oct. 10. To date, representatives for the band have remained tight-lipped on the sales performance of the studio set. Edge downplayed as “exaggerated” reports that “In Rainbows” had shifted more than 1.2 million copies, but admitted the average price paid was “probably pretty close” to £4 ($8).

“We haven’t analyzed the data yet,” he explains. “The servers are still functioning on delivering the records to people. When that calms down a bit, we will have a moment to analyze and drag the data off. ”

And he was philosophical on reports that the illegal platforms have delivered millions of units. “The fact of the matter is, as soon as a record goes into manufacture, or advance copies are released to the press, it goes onto BitTorrent,” he says. “That is the fact. What we are dealing with is a situation that we always dealing with.”

A label deal has yet to be struck for the physical release of the album, a spokesperson for the band says.

Still waiting on that In Rainbows album cover

We’re still not entirely convinced that what we posted the other day is the official cover for In Rainbows. We’ve received a lot of email that pointed out some typography and design differences with what is shown in the discbox image. Also, it doesn’t help that Stanley told us that the official artwork is not online yet:

not yet. maybe soonish, maybe not. going to ‘think about it’

Okay. In the meantime, if you want to some cool fan-made album covers, check out this site.
