Radiohead news wrap-up

We can come up with a ton of excuses on why nothing has been posted here since last month. Don’t worry, we’ll spare you. A lot of effort has been put in to a redesign of the entire site so it’s not like we’ve totally neglected things.

» So what’s new in the world of Radiohead? Well, as you probably know, the band is back with pal Nigel Godrich recording the new album “properly” now according to Thom. There are plenty of photos of behind the scenes action in the studio over at the band’s blog Dead Air Space. One of the photos (pictured above) is of Stanley painting. He usually bunks up with the band while in the studio and designs all the album artwork while they record. Could this be a hint of the album cover?

» Speaking of Mr. Donwood, there is a new section on his site called “Dead Children Playing.” Nice. There will be an exhibition in Barcelona, Spain from November 26 to December 16 where paintings from Stanley and Dr. Tchock (Thom Yorke) will be displayed. For more information, check out the site.

» Now for something completely different. Radiohead rag dolls.

» Later this month, Thom will be releasing a 5 song / 2 video EP called Spitting Feathers. This looks to be a Japanese release but Amazon has it for pre-sale. Here’s the tracklist:

» Better late then never, right? Thanks to Justin for sending us the Radiohead pumpkin he carved for Halloween.

» So by visiting Green Plastic, it would be assumed that you have an interest in Radiohead. Maybe you have an interest in marching bands as well? Well then, today is your lucky day. More on the Wyrd Sisters Lawsuit

We were able to get a statement from Kim Baryluk, one of the Wyrd Sisters, on her band’s lawsuit against Warner Bros. To catch up on what is going on, read our previous report.

Kim first wanted to say that they are not really wanting to go after Radiohead. “I believe that if they knew what Warner Bros was doing to a little band though, they would not want to be a part of it.”

Apparently she has been getting a lot of hate mail, and had this to say:

“I’m sorry you are so angry at us. I wish I could take the time to explain. The chart magazine did not fairly represent what happened. What happened is that the lawyers from Warner Bros called us in June and *threatened* us. They told us that if we didn’t sign some papers agreeing to co-exist with them then they’d ‘have their army of lawyers shut our little girl’s band down’.

In the real world, we have trademark rights to our name. Just the same way no one can go around calling themselves Warner Bros if they’re not Warner Bros. Yes, we know other wyrd sisters have popped up. They have not been musical bands, and no one has got the other wyrd sisters confused with us, so we have just let them slide by. Besides, no one has threatened us before, or told us that we should just give them what they want…our name… because they’ll hurt us if we don’t. That’s just not right.

Warner Bros did not do their homework. They have made huge publicity splashes about their wyrd sister band. If we go anywhere new now, people will show up expecting the boys from radiohead to be there. Their wyrd sisters will have global impact. We will be seen as the imposters. Can you imagine the abuse we’ll get then? This is not about greed, because we expect that the money will win as it always does and that is not us.

Warner is only now saying that they won’t use the name in the movie, since we’ve begun legal proceedings. It’s a little late for that. I certainly didn’t want a fight or this bad publicity, but my options are limited. Either way we lose. At least we’ll go down with a little dignity. I hope…”

Radiohead start work on new album

Radiohead are working on new material – and guitarist Jonny Greenwood has spoken for the first time about a rare live appearance next week in London.

As previously reported, new music from members of Radiohead will be played for the first time at the London Ether Festival.

Material penned by Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood will form part of The London Sinfonietta at the London Royal Festival Hall (March 27-28).

Organisers say the events will feature “two evenings of experimentation, collaboration and cross-genre juxtaposition”. New music from Greenwood and Yorke will form part of the show, along with more classical composers and traditional Arabic song.

Speaking in The Guardian newspaper, Greenwood explained the challenges of the shows, and how they will influence the next Radiohead record.
He said: “I feel embarrassed talking about it. I’m so patchy. I’ll be obsessed with a few composers, and know nothing about the rest. I get these enthusiasms which can drive the band crazy, but I just say: ‘Listen, French horns are amazing, we’ve got to find a way of using them. Or I’ll say, ‘It would be great if this song sounded like Penderecki, or Alice Coltrane’.

“And it’s childish because none of us can play jazz like Alice Coltrane, and none of us can write the kind of music that Penderecki does. We’ve only got guitars and a basic knowledge of music, but we reach for these things and miss. That’s what’s cool about it.”

Speaking about working with the Sinfonietta, he added: “They’re a great orchestra because they’re up for radically changing things at the last minute. I cut six minutes out during rehearsals… There’s something about classical musicians – they tend to be totally without ego, and so enthusiastic, but also just so talented.”

However, Greenwood has ruled out working in classical music full-time, saying that his heart remains with Radiohead.

He concluded: “Radiohead is always going to be the centre of what I do. Everything starts with songs, and with Thom, and with the excitement you can get in the band when you hear new music, and you know you’ve got the chance to watch it mutate and change. There’s nothing like that, nothing as exciting. We’re rehearsing at the moment, and again it’s fun. We all want to push forward, and when you have five people who are all like that, you couldn’t ask for a better thing.”

Jonny Greenwood made an appearance at the official Radiohead message board yesterday and described the band’s first day in their Los Angeles studio.

“Coz is playing bass right now, and singing along like a loony….pretty intense stuff in here! It’s day one, and going fine.” He also stated that the recording sessions will take a couple of weeks.

The night before, the band went to the Beck concert which Jonny described as “charming” and “ace”.

Jonny speaks!

Jonny Greenwood made an appearance on the official Radiohead messageboard earlier today where he shed some light on a couple of things:

Whether the song “Reckoner” would appear on the new album, Jonny replied, “Played once, dropped. Possibly the worst show that tour too, I’m afraid. Lovely spot though. I was very ill….”

Someone asked him to speak about the new album, which he described as “Guitars yes, big wiry synths yes, Philip singing yes lots of drumming yes.”

Jonny also dispelled the “Parrots” rumor by saying, “I’m afraid, my old love, that Parrot’s nest was an endearingly ramdom rumour started by whoever said it first.”
