OK Computer Radiohead The Bends

News for January 5, 2000

Well, a new year! Just think, I can now say that the new album will be released this year! OK, enough!

The Grammy nominees were announced yesterday and Radiohead has been nominated for their tour documentary, Meeting People is Easy. The film is nominated for the Best Long Form Music Video award. Other nominees include:

Don’t Stop (Gloria Estefan), The Making of “Ride With Bob” (Asleep at the Wheel), Band of Gypsys – Live at the Fillmore East (Jimi Hendrix), and Popmart – Live From Mexico City (U2).

You can catch the Grammy Awards this February 23, 2000. The complete list of nominees is listed here.

And now for the polls…
Amazon.com recently featured their “Best of the Millennium” poll and Radiohead’s OK Computer came in at #20.
French monthly mag Rock & Folk has their “Ideal Record Collection of the Century.” OK Computer, along with other released albums, were chosen for the best of 1997. [thanks Xavier]
Canada’s music channel, MuchMusic, has Radiohead’s “Just” #12 in their top 100 videos of the century. [thanks Michael]
MTV Asia has four Radiohead videos in their top 200 list: “Just” (#94), “Fake Plastic Trees” (#84), “Street Spirit” (#52), “Paranoid Android” (#40), “Karma Police” (#34), and “No Surprises” (#4). [thanks to Dave]

And finally, the Jubilee 2000 Coalition has recently put out the “People’s Millennium Write-down Book,” a book in which people can write down their feelings about debt in the third world. Thom, who supports Jubilee 2000, wrote this in the book:

ÏAAAAAAARGH Dinosaurs are roaming the earth. Stop them before they destroy us all !!!!! Please realise we the population of this planet are very concerned about the faceless unaccountable forces now ruling the planet like giant cranes roaming the earth kalasnikovs in hand killing indiscriminately. Please help us… thank you.”

You too can sign the book and show your support for this important organization. There are many locations throughout the UK in which you can sign it. Go here for the locations. You can also sign it online here.

Ed O'Brien OK Computer Pablo Honey Radiohead The Bends

News for December 26, 1999

Phew… now that I’m all stuffed up with Christmas treats, let’s continue where we left off…

Ink Blot Magazine just put up their “Best of the 90s” and guess what? Radiohead was an overwhelming #1 with OK Computer! You can see the other choices by visiting Ink Blot here.

Radiohead also did well in the French weekly culture mag Les Inrockuptibles, making it twice in their best albums of the last 25 years poll. OK Computer was # 3 and The Bends was #14.

Here’s what they had to say about Radiohead:

“OK Computer, or how an english band with a mixed résumé make the most of their third album to sublimate their every move, their voice, their feeling, their sounds. Both a comprehensive survey of rock and a brilliant concentrated.”
The Bends : “Before was the Pablo Honey album and its worldwide hit “Freak” [sic]. After will be the breathtaking OK Computer. Middle-aged, right below the surface, Radiohead craft The Bands, complex and ambitious rock collage.”

The Belgian radio station Studio Brussel is doing their “150 best songs of the last 40 years.” Radiohead were honored with multiple songs: Fake Plastic Trees (#120), Karma Police (#52), Paranoid Android (#25), Street Spirit (#22), and Creep (#6).

For those of you that have BBC America, there will be a rebroadcast of Radiohead’s performance on “Later with Jools Holland” on January 14 at 11pm ET.

The February 2000 issue of Select will feature an article about the upcoming album by Radiohead.

from NME.com:
As previously reported on NME.com, the documentary was filmed over the past year, with ‘No Surprises’ video director Grant Gee tracking Radiohead as they toured the world in support of ‘OK Computer’. No release date for the movie has been set yet.

Speaking to NME last week, Ed O’Brien said the film was now being edited and that a “low-key” premiere was being planned. He said: “It’s coming on really well. We went down last week and saw some of the rushes. Grant’s got about eight hours’ worth of stuff and it’s got to be condensed, obviously. It’s very honest, but it’s not a rockumentary, that’s the last thing we wanted it to be because that would be so Spinal Tap.”

Ed said the main thrust of the film was to convey the strange life of a rock group on the road, so they gave the director free rein. “I mean, you make a record within the confines of the five of you, and whoever else, then after that, you go out and tour this record and that’s when it gets bizarre, then it’s the rock’n’roll circus thing. It’s not normality and it’s not real. It’s his slant on that and I think it’s going to be quite interesting.”

Ed scotched widespread stories there would be a new Radiohead album before the end of this year, although he admitted that they have been recording in the back of the tourbus while they toured the last album.

He said: “We demoed stuff and things like that. But basically, I think an album has to be recorded over a certain period of time. So we’ll start work on it properly in November.” OK COMPUTER has gone platinum in the US.

The 7 Television Commercials will be released the United States on June 30.

Radiohead picked up two awards at the Ivor Novello Awards last month:
BEST CONTEMPORARY SONG – Karma Police
BEST SONG MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY – Paranoid Android

OK Computer Radiohead Thom Yorke tour

News for April 23, 1998

Well the US tour is over and done with. Don’t expect anymore tour dates from them. They are scheduled to play at the third annual Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington DC on June 13 and 14. Tickets for this mammoth concert are going on sale May 2 at your local TicketMaster outlets. For more info on this and the whole “Free Tibet” thing, visit www.tibet98.com.

What is this? This year’s Glastonbury Festival seems to have a band by the name of “On A Friday” on the bill. For those of you just joining us, “On A Friday” was the name Radiohead had before signing their record deal. Keep in mind folks, this is just a rumor… don’t get crazy yet.

As reported earlier, Thom is supposedly a guest on Cartoon Network’s Space Ghost Coast to Coast which airs Friday nights at midnight. No date has been announced for the show’s airing, but it is said that the show was taped last Saturday.

Radiohead has been nominated for two Ivor Norvello Awards (the UK’s most important songwritting awards.) Karma Police is nominated for Best Contemporary Song while Paranoid Android is nominated for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.

The Airbag/ How am I Driving EP should be available now to everyone. You can read a nice review of it in the L.A. Times by teasing your mouse here.
