Radiohead news wrap-up

mm Tottenham.jpg

We can come up with a ton of excuses on why nothing has been posted here since last month. Don’t worry, we’ll spare you. A lot of effort has been put in to a redesign of the entire site so it’s not like we’ve totally neglected things.

» So what’s new in the world of Radiohead? Well, as you probably know, the band is back with pal Nigel Godrich recording the new album “properly” now according to Thom. There are plenty of photos of behind the scenes action in the studio over at the band’s blog Dead Air Space. One of the photos (pictured above) is of Stanley painting. He usually bunks up with the band while in the studio and designs all the album artwork while they record. Could this be a hint of the album cover?

» Speaking of Mr. Donwood, there is a new section on his site called “Dead Children Playing.” Nice. There will be an exhibition in Barcelona, Spain from November 26 to December 16 where paintings from Stanley and Dr. Tchock (Thom Yorke) will be displayed. For more information, check out the site.

» Now for something completely different. Radiohead rag dolls.

» Later this month, Thom will be releasing a 5 song / 2 video EP called Spitting Feathers. This looks to be a Japanese release but Amazon has it for pre-sale. Here’s the tracklist:

1. Drunkk Machine
2. A Rat’s Nest
3. Jetstream
4. Harrowdown Hill (Extended Mix)
5. Iluvya
6. Video – Harrowdown Hill
7. Video – Analyse

» Better late then never, right? Thanks to Justin for sending us the Radiohead pumpkin he carved for Halloween.

» So by visiting Green Plastic, it would be assumed that you have an interest in Radiohead. Maybe you have an interest in marching bands as well? Well then, today is your lucky day. The University of Arizona marching band is doing a 15 minute Radiohead medley this year. See for yourself! Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3.

» Jonny Greenwood (Happy belated Birthday btw) is up for BBC Composer of the Year for 2006. You can stream his piece “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” here.

» A lot of people emailed to tell us that Thom’s “Analyse” plays at the end of Christopher Nolan’s new film The Prestige. So now you know.
Ciao!

NME articles

The two NME articles are now online here and here. Here’s the bit about the new album:

Colin talks of their plans for the new album. “We fly to LA at the end of August. (Long-time producer) Nigel Godrich rents a space there. Were going to spend two weeks working. The plan is like with OK Computer – we’ll have loads of songs we know and it’ll just be (mimes dumping a pile of books on the table) there!

He thinks about this: “It means we’ll be in America for September 11. Which will be interesting.

They hope to release the new LP, their sixth studio album, in March next year. There’s a discussion about the new songs. Since Thom didn’t introduce most of them on stage, people are curious about the titles. Have they really called a song “A Punch Up At A Wedding?” They have. Thom finds the fuss over the titles funny. I should have handed out lyric sheets to the audience,” he says, which seems like such a terribly un-Radiohead thing to do (for a band who, as “artists”, hate the idea of giving anything away for fear it will spirit the “art” itself into nothingness) that we assume it’s a joke.

Nigel Godrich & Beck

The original genre-hopper, Beck, has teamed up with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich to work on his upcoming album. The pair previously worked together on Beck’s 1998 acoustic departure, Mutations, which was recorded in around two week’s time. According to NME, sources close to the singer say that Beck hopes to have the same type of work schedule on the new album, about a song a day. As previously reported, Dan the Automator has also been working on the new album, which has yet to be named or given a release date. Beck took time out from working on the album on Tuesday (February 26) to take part in a benefit for the Recording Artists’ Coalition in support of of Senate Bill 1246 – legislation to repeal California Labor Code 2855 that excludes recording artists from 1987’s “Seven-Year Statute.” At the event, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke made a surprise appearance, joining Beck for a show-stopping rendition of the Velvet Underground’s “I’m Set Free.”
