Philip Selway at the Pegasus Theatre November 10 & 11

Philip SelwayAaaand we’re back from a short break…

While we were gone, it was announced that Philip Selway would be doing a couple of solo shows in Oxford this month. The Radiohead drummer writes on Dead Air Space:

Hello

Next month, on the 10th and 11th November, I will be doing a couple of shows of my solo material at The Pegasus Theatre in Oxford to mark the start of their 50th Anniversary. I’m a patron of the theatre and these shows are fundraisers to support the fantastic and really valuable work that Pegasus does in providing access to the creative arts for young people. It’s a wonderfully intimate place to see a show, so if you fancy coming along, I’d love to see you there. Tickets cost £25 and are available from my store here:

Radiohead Were Here: a new short film about Radiohead and Oxford

There’s a new short film called Radiohead Were Here, which is about “one man’s quest to shop in Waitrose in peace. It’s also a homage to one of the greatest British bands of all time. It’s also a love song to Oxford’s local music scene, as told by the people who know it best. But really, it’s just some funny stories about stalking Thom Yorke.”

The film also features interviews with various local Oxford bands such as Spring Offensive, The Scholars and Empire Safari.

You can watch the film below. For more information and to get updates, check out http://radioheadwerehere.blogspot.com/. Also, check out our Oxford Guide!

New Documentary about Radiohead/Oxford Music Scene

Anyone Can Play GuitarJon Spira writes in to tell us about a new documentary he made called Anyone Can Play Guitar:

My documentary about the music scene that inspired, nurtured and launched Radiohead is now finished. Ed, Colin and their manager Chris Hufford all took part in the interviews and there is a bunch of hugely significant never-before-seen archival material including early live footage and what we believe to be the earliest ever band photos (taken during the recording of their first demo). We need to raise a few thousand pounds to fund the sound mix and picture grade, so we’ve signed up with indiegogo.com.

Anyone who donates to the project via the link below will get perks packages which include tickets to the premiere, credits on the film and free very limited edition pre-release DVDs of the film with extras that will never be available elsewhere. This is really your only guaranteed chance to see the film as early as possible.

BBC Oxford Introducing recreates The Bends by Radiohead

In March 2010 BBC Oxford’s local music show “Introducing…” celebrates its fifth birthday.

To mark the occasion the team have also decided to recreate Radiohead’s seminal album The Bends.

Their version, dubbed ‘Round The Bends’, is a loving reinterpretation of the classic record which is 15 years old in March.

The team have brought together their favourite acts to work their magic on these amazing Radiohead songs.

Each of the album tracks have been completely reinterpreted and as a whole stand together as a phenomenal homage to the original.

Local band Stornoway kick off proceedings with their version of Planet Telex. Stornoway are arguably the most successful local group of late having played at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Glastonbury and on Jools Holland. They started the new year in The BBC’s Sound Of 2010 list.

Richard Walters and Little Fish have also given up time from their hectic international schedules to play tracks on the album.

‘Round The Bends’ also features various new exciting discoveries from the last 12 months, such as The Scholars, Spring Offensive and Ute.

The album was released on 4 March 2010 on iTunes. A total of 49p from every individual track downloaded and £4.90 from every album downloaded will benefit the BBC Children In Need Appeal, a company limited by guarantee. BBC Children in Need Appeal is a charity registered in England and Wales (802052) and Scotland (SC039557)’

The album launch gig took place on 6 March at the 02 Academy. More details can be found here.

‘Round the Bends’ tracklisting:

Stornoway ‘Planet Telex’, Ute ‘The Bends’, Jessie Grace ‘High and Dry’, We Aeronauts ‘Fake Plastic Trees’, Spring Offensive ‘Bones’, The Winchell Riots ‘Nice Dream’, Little Fish ‘Just’, The Scholars ‘My Iron Lung’, Richard Walters ‘Bulletproof… I Wish I Was’, The Family Machine ‘Black Star’, Alphabet Backwards ‘Sulk’, The Evenings ‘Street Spirit (Fade Out)’, BONUS TRACK Lee Christian ‘Talk Show Host’.

Radiohead vs Ride in football

We were sent a clip from an upcoming documentary about the Oxford music scene called “Local Support.” Jon Spira, the creator of the documentary, explains the clip:

I’m currently in post production on a feature length documentary I’m making about the history of the Oxford music scene. Obviously Radiohead feature quite prominently in it and have been very supportive, I’ve interviewed Ed, Colin and their manager Chris Hufford at length about their early days. I’ve put an interesting outtake up on youtube from my interview with Nigel Powell.

Anyway, I just thought you’d like to know, the film will talk about the band’s origins in their own words and those of their friends/contemporaries. If all things go to plan, there should be some mouthwatering unseen archival footage too.

There is a facebook group to stay up to date on all the news at… http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9710396642

Check out the clip below, where Nigel remembers a football match between members of Radiohead and another Oxford band you should know, Ride.
