Philip Selway’s “Familial” Out Now

Today marks the release of Phil’s solo album, Familial, in the United States. It was released yesterday in Europe. The Village Voice spoke with Selway about the shift from Radiohead drummer to solo singer-songwriter for Familial. The Voice‘s Vijith Assar says of the album : “Elliott Smith’s influence runs strong on these delicately strummed tracks, Selway’s quiet whisper cooing over songs steeped in striking sentimentality.” Selway talks about the new album, including his passing percussion duties along to Wilco’s Glenn Kotche, in an interview at villagevoice.com.

Here’s the tracklist:

  1. “By Some Miracle”
  2. “Beyond Reason”
  3. “A Simple Life”
  4. “All Eyes on You”
  5. “The Ties That Bind Us”
  6. “Patron Saint”
  7. “Falling”
  8. “Broken Promises”
  9. “Don’t Look Down”
  10. “The Witching Hour”

We suggest you go out and purchase it now. You can get it on iTunes, Amazon, or your local record shop.

Selway and his band make their way to Ireland this weekend for the Electric Picnic at Stradbally Hall, as part of their month-long tour.

Radiohead taking a break from recording

According to Phil Selway, the band is taking a break from recording their new album. This conflicting news comes a month after Ed told BBC 6 Music that they were “a matter of weeks” from completing the album.

Phil told EW MusicMix: “It’s not finished yet. It’s still ongoing. We like where we are so far.”

The musician also refused to set a release date.

He said: “Oh, I don’t know. We keep on hitting those points where you think, ‘We’re there’. And then you think, ‘No, it’s not’. We’re having a break from it at the moment… and then we’ll come back to it later in the summer and see where we are.”

What do you think? Are we reading too much in to this?

Radiohead’s Phil Selway Debutes New Songs

For a band that hasn’t put out a record in three years, Radiohead has been in the news a lot lately: Thom Yorke has kept busy, rehearsing for shows planned later this month, collaborating with Flying Lotus, and remixing Liars and MF Doom; Jonny Greenwood is the BBC Composer-in Association, set to score the film adaptation of Norwegian Wood. And for the past week, Radiohead’s drummer Phil Selway has been quietly touring along the Mediterranean coast. Thanks to a few intrepid Italian fans, we now have some live recordings of Selway’s solo effort. Songs like “Running Blind,” “By Some Miracle,” “Broken Promises,” and “Patron Saint” (featured above) will likely appear on Selway’s solo record due out later this year. With only some spare accompaniment provided by Lisa Germano and Sebastian Steinberg (both of whom worked with Selway on last year’s Neil Finn-led supergroup 7 World Collide), the songs are stripped down, acoustic numbers that sound somewhere between John Martyn, Tim Buckley, and Neil Halstead. Selway explains in the clip above that Wilco multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone and drummer Glenn Kotche will also appear on the album. All this makes you wonder how much say Selway has had in songwriting for Radiohead, so far, or if he’ll come out from behind the drumkit for Radiohead’s eighth LP.

Phil Selway gets his tambourine on for Sudan 365

Phil is joining other drummers from around the world to support Sudan 365. In 2011, a referendum will determine whether or not the Southern region of Sudan becomes independent from the North. Experts fear that instability in the run-up to the referendum or its aftermath could reignite a civil war and cause massive human rights abuses unless international efforts are intensified to find a peaceful path through the next 12 months.

Here’s the call-to-action video, which also features Richard Jupp of Elbow, Caroline Corr of the Corrs, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jonny Quinn of Snow Patrol, Stewart Copeland of the Police, and many more.

How to get involved:

Take part in a world-wide drumming video and help us pressure world leaders to push for peace in Sudan. Simply post a video reply on YouTube – in your video description add a line about who’s doing the drumming and where it’s happening, then tag it with ‘Sudan365’ and ‘beat for peace’. We’ll take the best responses we receive and mix them into a final video – containing clips of drummers from across the globe – to demonstrate the support for international action to prevent further conflict.
