Thom Yorke to contribute to New Moon soundtrack?

In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, movie director Chris Weitz spilled the beans about the new Twilight sequel, New Moon. Weitz mentions that Thom Yorke is “interested” in contributing to the movie’s soundtrack.

Speaking about the music in New Moon, Weitz revealed that requests have flooded in from bands who want to contribute to the soundtrack; after all, the first Twilight film helped launch alt-rock band Paramore into the pop culture stratosphere. In talks to appear on the soundtrack are none other than Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Kings of Leon.

“Fortunately, I’m not at the stage where I have to turn anybody down yet, because everything is still kind of up in the air,” Weitz shared, “but I am surprised at some of the bands that have said they’re interested. It’s kind of great. The criterion will still always be what’s right for the movie at that given moment, but Thom Yorke is interested; we might, if we’re very lucky, get Kings of Leon to do something… it’s exciting to be able to have access to this kind of talent.”

The L.A. Times also has an interview with Weitz and had this to say:

Driving home from a day of post-production, Weitz says he understands what’s at stake. There are 450 visual effects shots to complete, in addition to the score and the movie’s soundtrack, which he says will feature songs from Radiohead, Muse and Band of Skulls, among others. But the sequences he’s readying for the event — one, an action scene that will feature some of those effects, the other, a love scene sure to elicit hysteria from the crowd — will be done in time.

Obviously this is a rumor and until it is confirmed officially by the band, we’ll treat it as one. We’re a bit skeptical…

Greenwood News

The brothers Greenwood are in the news today. First up, it was announced on music composer James Lavino’s MySpace blog that Colin Greenwood is contributing to the soundtrack of the Alex Karposvksy’s film Woodpecker. The soundtrack is apparently out now digitally and the film has been making the festival rounds since March.

In other news, Jonny Greenwood’s Popcorn Superhet Receiver is making its West Coast debut on August 21 at San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre. As you may know, Greenwood won the 2006 BBC British Composer Awards for this piece. As Pitchfork reports, Popcorn is billed as having “surprise guests” so it could be that Jonny may actually be part of the performance since the band will be in San Francisco the day after for the Outside Lands Festival. This is just a guess and not by any means official.

Tom Cruise on Radiohead

As you may know, Tom Cruise has spoken a lot about Radiohead and the role their music has played on the filming of his new move Vanilla Sky. Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview:

Is it true that Cameron Crowe played music while taping a scene?
He always did. It started on Jerry Macguire with me; that was the first picture. Cameron is a musician also. He’s a writer, a musician, a filmmaker and we just started playing around one day and he just had music. As an actor you just let it wash over you and see what color it’s going to bring to the scene. He also does stuff where we’re going along and he’ll throw out lines at me, it feels like a workshop when we’re working. Everybody is very comfortable and relaxed and there was a lot of focus on the scene and everyone kind of contributes. It helps the actors and sometimes you get different ideas and colors. For this movie we listened to Kid A a lot and to the U2 album. The Icelandic group (Sigur Ros) too. Of course, the Stones and Bruce Springsteen but a lot of Kid A. Walking through New York I think of U2 and I think of Radiohead.

RADIOHEAD have written the soundtrack to a new BBC drama series. The Oxford band have penned all the incidental music for the adaptation of prize-winning Irish author Robert McLiam Wilson’s 1997 Eureka Street: A Novel Of Ireland Like No Other, a four-part series to be aired in September. The soundtrack is purely instrumental.

Although the band have donated previously recorded tunes to soundtracks before, most notably Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet, this is the first time they have written an original score.

The band agreed to get involved in the project because they are big fans of Wilson’s work, with guitarist Ed O’Brien in particular citing Eureka Street as one of his favourite novels.

“It’s a great book,” he said, “I was completely blown away by it.”

Wilson himself has also, rather obliquely, returned the compliment.

He said: “Their music cheers me up, oddly. I know it’s not meant to but it does.”

A spokeswoman told NME: “This is one of those things they just really wanted to do for themselves.”

The drama is set in present-day Belfast and revolves around the life of repoman Jake Jackson and his friends. Starring Dervla Kirwan and Vincent Regan, and directed by Adrian Shergold, noted for other TV dramas Holding On and Births, Marriages And Deaths, Eureka Street is the most expensive drama filmed in Northern Ireland. Radiohead are currently working in a studio in Gloucestershire, recording the follow-up to 1997’s ‘OK Computer’.
