New Radiohead track “Harry Patch (In Memory Of)”

Thom and Jonny

Radiohead have released a new song today in tribute to the late Harry Patch, who was the last living British World War I veteran to fight in the trenches until his death on July 25th at the ripe old age of 111. Thom was moved by an interview Patch gave a couple of years ago and was inspired to write a song. He writes on DAS:

“i am the only one that got through
the others died where ever they fell
it was an ambush
they came up from all sides
give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves
i’ve seen devils coming up from the ground
i’ve seen hell upon this earth
the next will be chemical but they will never learn”

Recently the last remaining UK veteran of the 1st world war Harry Patch died at the age of 111.
I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago on the Today program on Radio4.
The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.
It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death.
It was done live in an abbey. The strings were arranged by Jonny.
I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor.

It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us.
I hope we do not forget.

As Harry himself said
“Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims”.

This morning the Today program played the song for the first time and now it is available to download from our website.

Please click here to download.

The proceeds of this song will go to the British Legion.

To peace and understanding.

New Thom Yorke track: “All for the Best”

Ciao My Shining Star

Stereogum has the premiere of the new song, “All for the Best”, that Thom covered for the Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy tribute album. You may remember us reporting about this a few weeks back.

We’ve been told that Thom’s brother, in addition to having his own track on the album under his band Unbelievable Truth, provides the backing vocals for “All for the Best.” Correct us if we’re wrong, but this is the first time the two brothers have ever recorded a song together.

To hear the track, head on over to Stereogum.

Radiohead on David Bowie tribute album [UPDATED]

Ground Control to Major Thom
Ground Control to Major Thom

A new David Bowie tribute album is scheduled to be released in February 2010 and Radiohead are rumored to be among the artists contributing. This comes from the website of Mick Karn, another artist who is contributing to the album. He writes:

“The release of the David Bowie tribute album on Warchild has been postponed until February 2010 due to some of the artists schedules not permitting an earlier release.

Featured artists will include Radiohead, Carla Bruni and Charlotte Gainsbourg and will include Mick’s version of Ashes to Ashes.”

This new War Child release is a followup to this year’s War Child: Heroes.

Once we have official confirmation on this from the band, we’ll pass it along. (via TwentyFourBit)

UPDATE: Pitchfork is saying the rumor is not true. Bummer…

OKX: A Tribute to OK Computer

okx_cover.jpg
Stereogum has put up a covers compilation album called OKX: A Tribute to OK Computer where they asked various artists to record a song from the legendary OK Computer album.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Radiohead’s OK Computer we’ve asked some of our favorite musicians to participate in a song-by-song covers compilation. Indicative of the album’s continued importance, each invitee jumped at the chance; the results are personal, intense, tellingly various. Slow down, dig in, enjoy. But note: we did this all legal and everything, so we can’t keep these up forever…get ’em before someone else does. Ambition makes you look pretty.

Here’s the tracklist:
Doveman – “Airbag”
Slaraffenland – “Paranoid Android”
Mobius Band – “Subterranean Homesick Alien”
Vampire Weekend – “Exit Music (For a Film)”
David Bazan’s Black Cloud – “Let Down”
John Vanderslice – “Karma Police”
Samson Dalonoga feat. The Found Sound Orchestra – “Fitter Happier”
Cold War Kids – “Electioneering”
The Twilight Sad – “Climbing Up the Walls”
Marissa Nadler feat. Black Hole Infinity – “No Surprises”
My Brightest Diamond – “Lucky”
Flash Hawk Parlor Ensemble – “The Tourist”
